Meet the interns that contributed extensively to the development of this project.
Seth is a Fourth Year student at the University of Virginia and is originally from Ashland, VA. He is a member of the Distinguished Major Program for Politics and Foreign Affairs with minors in History and Sociology. He is currently writing a thesis for the DMP that is focused on the political effects of COVID-19 in relation to human rights and authoritarianism. After he finishes undergrad in, he hopes to attend graduate school for International Relations or International and Human Rights Law.
Outside of academics, Seth is the Vice President of CORE, a sexual assault education and advocacy group at UVA, as well as a Chairman for Class Council. In his previous two summers, he was an Orientation Leader and welcomed new students to UVA. When he isn’t too busy with school or work, he is looking for some adventure to take with his friends or at a coffee shop reading and writing.
Harris Manganiello is a rising Senior at Bates College pursuing a double major in Economics and Chineses with a concentration in Philosophy. He has interests in Public and Environmental Economics. He currently resides in Collegeville, Pennslyvania, and enjoys Ultimate Frisbee and spending time outdoors.
Julian Kelly is a graduate student at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy where he focuses on international security and diplomatic studies. The son of a Taiwanese immigrant, he has a strong professional and personal interest in East Asian security issues - hoping to eventually turn his education and passion for public service into a career U.S. Diplomat. Before attending The Fletcher School, Julian previously taught English and studied Mandarin in Taiwan as well as interned with Speaker Pelosi in the U.S. House of Representatives. In his free time, Julian enjoys baking bread and shooting film photography.
Isabell Creed is a native New Yorker and a rising senior at Tufts University, majoring in Political Science and International Relations. Following her passion to make her community a better place, Isabell has worked on a number of political campaigns in the greater Boston area. Isabell also completed research on policing in American and Turkish foreign relations during her time at Tufts, and studied abroad in Cadiz, Spain for a summer. More recently she worked in the immigration unit at Greater Boston Legal Services conducting country conditions research and working with clients. Moving forward Isabell is excited to build on her policy research experience as part of the COVID-19 Today team with the goal of helping the public understand and learn from the COVID-19 pandemic response.
Laura grew up in Bend, Oregon and moved to Seattle six years ago to attend the University of Washington to complete her undergraduate. After graduating, she moved to Madrid, Spain to teach English and travel. She just completed her first year of law school and hopes to work in environmental law. When she's not studying or working, she enjoys hiking, rafting, cooking and drinking wine. She is very excited to be working at covid19today.org!
Michael Lavin is a senior attending the University of California, Berkeley, earning an undergraduate degree in Economics. He also is interested in public policy. Last fall, Michael was able to intern for Congressman Mark DeSaulnier from California’s 11th Congressional District. In addition, Michael has gained experience in government relations teams including working with the peer-to-peer car sharing platform Turo. Upon completion of his degree, Michael hopes to be working either in government or with public policy think tanks. Beyond his interests in politics, he also enjoys watching sports, exploring new cities, and hiking. Michael is excited to work with the rest of the Covid19Today.org team.
Hayden Clark is a rising senior at Bates College, majoring in Philosophy with concentrations in Applying Mathematical Methods and Law and Society. He has interests in politics and law. He has recently moved back to his childhood apartment in Chicago where he spends his days reading, calling friends, and going for walks.
Siming Xu is a policy intern at COVID-19 Today. Born and raised in Tianjin, China, she moved to Seattle and now she is pursuing a master’s degree in public administration at the University of Washington with specification of policy analysis and environmental policy. She worked as an intern in Beijing Organising Committee for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in 2019, and mainly served for planning department where she gained her professional interest in policy research. She enjoys visiting museums, photographing and travelling in her spare time.
Alexander is a recent graduate of Bates College with a major in political economy and minors in history and Russian. At Bates, Alexander was an Academic All-American swimmer and varsity record holder, a member of the Bates Democrats, and a representative for the Fat Cats, a collegiate competitive eating club. His interests include the political economy of financial crises, financial regulation policy, and international trade. Alexander currently resides in Trumbull, Connecticut, where he enjoys open-water swimming, running, and is an avid blues guitarist.
